Fleet Management

There are many important topics in fleet management that we use to inform the recommendations made to our clients. While we understand that each transit agency's needs are unique, our recommendations follow from a basic understanding of the following topic areas and how their consistency from vehicle to vehicle and fleet to fleet remain the same. As such, we can generally observe issues through the monitoring of trends, and then provide useful recommendations based on proven principles of fleet maintenance. .
  1. Basics of Vehicle Anatomy: Understanding the key components of a vehicle, like the engine, transmission, and braking system.
  2. Oil and Fluid Changes: Understanding the importance of regular oil and fluid changes, including which fluids to check (oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid).
  3. Tire Maintenance: Topics like checking tire pressure, understanding tire wear patterns, and the importance of timely tire rotations and replacements.
  4. Brake Systems: Recognizing the signs of worn brake pads or rotors and the importance of regular brake inspections.

  6. Air Filters: The role of air filters, how often they need to be replaced, and the implications of a dirty filter.
  7. Belt and Hose Checks: Recognizing wear and tear on belts and hoses, and understanding their role in vehicle performance.
  8. Vehicle Diagnostics: Using onboard diagnostic tools (OBD) and understanding common error codes.
  9. Scheduled Maintenance: Importance of adhering to manufacturer-recommended service intervals and what tasks are performed during these check-ups.
  10. Fuel System Maintenance: Recognizing the importance of clean fuel injectors and when to replace fuel filters.
  11. Lighting and Visibility: Ensuring headlights, brake lights, and other lights are functioning, along with windshield wiper maintenance.
  12. Suspension and Alignment: Signs of suspension issues and the importance of periodic alignment checks.
  13. Air Conditioning and Heating Systems: Basic understanding of how they work and signs of malfunction.
  14. Transmission Care: Recognizing the signs of transmission issues and understanding the importance of regular transmission fluid changes.
  15. Emergency Response: What to do in the case of a vehicle breakdown, how to use emergency road kits, and understanding basic emergency repairs.
  16. Fuel Efficiency Tips: How maintenance impacts fuel consumption and tips to optimize fuel efficiency.
  17. Cleaning and Corrosion Prevention: The importance of regular vehicle cleaning, especially in areas prone to salt and rust.
  18. Vehicle Inspection Checklists: Creating and understanding routine checklists for drivers to ensure vehicle safety and operability.
  19. Basic Troubleshooting: Recognizing common signs of vehicle issues (like strange noises or leaks) and what they might indicate.
  20. Staying Updated: The importance of staying updated with vehicle recalls, updates, and advancements in vehicle technology.
Remember, even though a fleet manager might not perform these tasks personally, having a fundamental understanding of them can be crucial in decision-making, communicating with maintenance teams, and ensuring the longevity and safety of the fleet.
